Jeremy Gardiner’s new series of work focuses on the Lake District, where over the past three years he has observed its many mountains, lakes and waterfalls. The paintings show his fascination and understanding of the landscape and its history. All are highly personal evocations of light, atmosphere, weather, time of day and the changing seasons.

The distinctive textured paintings on view, with their many layers and expressive colours, reflect the profound insights Gardiner gains from his detailed study and analytical approach. He explains: “My use of colour is a combination of my knowledge of geology and my own emotional response to the landscape, the environment and my studio practice, where serendipity plays a part”.

The paintings, while eschewing pure abstraction, remain recognisable. Gardiner’s work reveals something deeper about the spirit of place, be they panoramic depictions of two of the most beautiful lakes: Windermere and Ullswater, or the mountains, lakes and waterfalls, and the spectacular landscape surrounding them.
