This exhibition of thirty-six paintings centres around the theme of the lighthouse. Jeremy Gardiner has travelled around the southwest coast, painting sixteen lighthouses and their surroundings in three counties, Cornwall, Devon and Dorset, including three islands, the Isle of Wight, Lundy Island and Godrevy Island. The work you see here results from many hours spent on the coast, making meticulous line drawings, studying weather conditions at first hand and painting en plein air.
Professor Christiana Payne, Art Historian.
We have a romantic view of lighthouses, and that stems from being a maritime nation but also stems from the architectural beauty of these fantastic feats of Victorian engineering. They were designed to withstand storms and gigantic waves.
